Chapter Five
She breathed in heavily, taking control. George and Arthur were screaming, as was Marie, but Dawn drowned out the words, concentrating on the physical situation around her only and the opportunities it gave as she held tightly onto the porcelain shard. Soon, she could only see Thomas mouthing the words of the countdown, his cheeks almost as red as his hair.
âSeven⦠six⦠Fiveâ¦â
She wasnât going to die now. To do so would be to let George and Arthur down.
âFour⦠threeâ¦â
She moved the porcelain shard in her hand, using it like a knife and reacted suddenlyâshe stabbed him through the hand that held the Glock, piercing his tattoo. He yelled at the pain.
With her other hand, she forced the gun from him, then used his wounded hand to drag him to the ground, throwing her knees on his chest and neck, and shoving his face into the wooden floor. She thrust the gun at his head with one hand and kept his palm pinned to the ground with the shard using her other.
Sheâd been too quick. The blonde lieutenant didnât have his weapon ready to fire and the bearded one only had his arms around the boys in restraint, in no position to attack.
âIf you want your superior to survive, put your weapons on the floor and remove the barricade from that door.â
When they hesitated, exchanging looks, she twisted the porcelain in Thomasâ hand. The sound of bones breaking and the yelp that followed urged them to do as they were told.
It took many minutes. Everyone in the room watched in silence as the barricade was removed. Even Harris on the phone didnât say a word, too afraid to upset the new status quo.
As the last piece of furniture was taken away, the bearded lieutenant turned back with his hand placed in his jacket.
Dawn knew the action wellâhe had another weapon hidden. As he pulled out the gun and fired towards her, she ducked out of the way, releasing Thomas.
From her position on the floor, she fired Thomasâ pistol at the bearded lieutenant and struck him in the eye. He fell back against the door with a clatter and flailing arms, then sank to the ground.
Thomas bellowed in anger, scrambling for Dawnâs pistol from the table and targeting her, but when he pulled the trigger, nothing happened.
âFingerprint technology,â she smiled as she reloaded the pistol. âUseless to anyone but me.â
He threw the gun at her as she fired, throwing off her aim enough to miss him.
Thomas and the blonde lieutenant seized the two boys, using them as shields as they backed towards the door in a scrambled retreat. She picked up her gun so that she now had two pistols, one in each hand.
âYou wonât shoot now, Burgess,â Thomas spat as he moved away, crouching behind Arthurâs back with his arm around the boyâs neck. âShoot and theyâre dead. Yes?â
âUnderstood,â Dawn stood on the threshold of the dining room with the two pistols trained on the two men. She didnât have clear enough shots to take them out without hurting the boys.
